Akita
This is a large sized
dog whose origin is Japan. There are two types of this dog; the American one
and the Japanese one. You can expect to choose from a wide range of colors with
the American one but fewer colors with the Japanese. This breed is pretty
intelligent, bold, independent and powerful. You will realize this dog does not
notice strangers but is quite friendly with family.
This dog breed might be
oblivious to strangers but it is quite protective of its property. The Akita
will often clean the face after a meal. This dog will rarely bark except for
good reason. However, this dog breed will make his thoughts known with mumbles,
grunts and moans. It might be somewhat aggressive to other dogs especially
those of the same sex.
One thing the Akita
likes to do is to hold things he loves with his/her mouth. Don’t confuse this
with aggression. Sometimes, the dog will hold your arm with his mouth to show
affection, sometimes he/she just wants to walk, and he/she will go for the
leash. Training this dog breed needs a strong personality; not a harsh
approach.
Australian shepherd
This is a medium sized
dog which you will commonly hear being referred to as the Aussie. This dog is
full of energy which means you have to exercise it a lot, as well as pay a lot
of attention to it. Don’t confuse its energy for it being hyperactive; it’s
normal. Occasionally, you will come across the calm, easy going type. Generally,
this dog breed is highly intelligent and loves a good play session.
When it comes to the
work, this dog loves learning tricks and other activities that will challenge
both mind and body. You can expect the utmost loyalty when you have this dog.
The dog will bark to send out warnings but not the kind of barking you would term obsessive. The Australian shepherd loves being near its owner.
With all the energy
this dog possesses, you might want to keep up otherwise, it gets quite
destructive. With children, this dog is awesome. It loves to please.
Border collie
This is a medium sized
dog with variable coats from one dog to the other. These dogs require physical exercise from time to time. Intelligent
behavior is one of the key characteristics of this breed. This dog breed is
energetic and quite playful which means you as the owner should provide plenty
of play. Failure to do that will lead to this dog becoming destructive.
You will notice this
dog is always aware of his/her surroundings. Also, it will be easy to train
this dog. The Border collie gets along with other dogs and with children.
However, dogs of the same sex present a challenge. Show some leadership with
this dog and everything will be okay.
French bulldog
(Frenchies)
The most visible
feature of this dog is the bat ears. What makes this dog so lovable is the
unique appearance and mischievous behavior. This dog likes to goof around. Even
though this is what you would call a small dog, it has a powerful body composed
of pure muscle. The dog loves to play but also likes some lazy time.
This dog does well in
an apartment block because he does not need much exercise. A fifteen minute
walk in each day is all he/she needs. However, you have to be firm and
consistent with this dog. Human contact should be a constant in his/her life.
Rhodesian ridgeback
(Lion dog, Lion hound)
This is a large sized
dog which also happens to be very muscular. This dog is an avid hunter but
he/she is surprisingly calm in the house. If you happen to have young kids, it
is not advisable to have this dog around them. During play, the dog can easily
knock them down. This dog is named so because of the ridge of hair that grows
on its back. Intelligent and loyal are good traits to describe this dog’s
demeanor.
It is wise to socialize
them well early enough to avoid them being unmanageable later on. You will also
note this dog is quite aloof around strangers. If you love jogging, this will
be a lovely companion for you.
